Though it may sound intimidating, computer coding is surprisingly accessible and is beneficial for students with or without special needs. Coding is a hot topic right now in education, reflecting the increased workplace demands for students in the STEM disciplines who are “digitally literate.” Teaching coding in the classroom can help students develop problem-solving skills and refine their critical thinking abilities. When we help students learn to code, we are promoting social and managerial skills, and students’ confidence grows as they learn to create applications to solve real-world problems. Whether it’s part of the classroom curriculum, or a “code club” that meets after school, there is room for everyone to learn, grow, make friends, and have fun.
